Extra Credit Option – 1st TERM
Find a newspaper article, magazine article, or story from a credible internet site which has some type of mathematical content. Look for articles with statistics, charts and graphs, some type of analysis of numbers, or maybe a scientific development. You may also want to look at political stories about school vouchers in Utah or No Child Left Behind issues nationwide. What do they say about math progress in schools?
Write a one page, typed, double-spaced paper which gives a short summary of the story or article and tells how this article may impact your life or the lives of others.
Here are some possible questions to address in your paper:
• What is this article about?
• Does the subject of the article have anything to do with math?
• What kind of mathematical data is used in the article.
• What do the authors or people quoted in the article think about this issue?
• What do I think about this issue? Do I agree or disagree with it?
• Does this affect me as a student here at Tooele High? Does it affect people in my community? How?
• What are the results of this article? What is going to happen next?
Requirements
One page (2 pages maximum), typed, and double-spaced
Paper must be neat, thought out, and not plagiarized.
Include the article you used with the paper.
You may turn in a maximum of 2 papers.
Each paper is worth 10 points
